Anti-aging For The Area Around Your Eyes
- Posted on: May 15 2018
Your eyes are the window to your soul, which means we use them to convey loads of emotions. Surprised? Raise your eyebrows! Delighted? Break into a grin, complete with eye-corner crinkles! Serious and intense? It’ll show in your gaze.
But the root of emotion is “motion,” and over the years, all this motion leaves its mark in your periorbital region (the area around your eyes). These changes become visible in your 30s, with wrinkles often appearing sooner in the eye area than the rest of the face, simply because that skin is thin and fragile.
First, let’s talk prevention. Sunglasses and a hat prevent squinting, and squinting is a big contributor to “crows feet”—those starburst wrinkles that start from the corner of your eye. A solid mineral sunscreen, good hydration, and the right moisturizing products are a great part of any anti-aging plan. Products with alpha hydroxy acids or retinoids can stimulate collagen and elastin growth, but remember to apply eye products by patting gently. Rubbing this delicate skin will just increase your potential to wrinkle!
Dark under-eye circles can be accentuated by allergies and exhaustion, as well as by thinning skin due to collagen loss, which allows blood vessels to show through.
Retinoid creams can be an amazing fix for the latter, but if you’re not seeing the results you want, talk to us about plumping those under-eye hollows with noninvasive dermafillers. Volbella is a silky-blend option that’s perfect for working in sensitive areas.
Laser resurfacing treatment is also an option for vanishing dark circles. The thing about dark circles is, they can have a number of causes, including underlying anatomy or true hyper-pigmentation. The most effective treatment for you will directly address whatever is causing your issue, so make sure to schedule a consultation before scheduling a treatment, so we can help you understand what’s going on and what your treatment options are.
If wrinkles and fine lines are a concern, dermafillers or botox can help! These are also perfect nonsurgical option to target sagging, droopy eyelids.
Dermafillers will smooth deep groves, while botox will relax fine lines, temporarily erasing them and ensuring that they don’t turn into those deep groves. (Fillers are also a good choose for large “expression” lines between and above the eyebrows, in the forehead area.)
Ok, let’s talk lashes! Maybe you used to have gorgeous, luscious lashes, and now they seem like they’re barely there? That’s normal, because lashes get thinner and shorter as we age. Ask Dr. Adams about a prescription for Latisse, which is proven to safely darken and increase the fullness of lashes. (Bonus! It’s highly effective!)
Other products we like (and carry, no prescription necessary!) include Eminence’s organic Raspberry Eye Masque, which uses vitamins, antioxidants, and extracts to hydrate, de-puff, and improve elasticity in the skin around your eyes. This masque is great for evening skin tone and soothing redness, dryness or irritation.
And if you want to exfoliate gently, without tugging (and increasing the possibility for more wrinkles!), Eminence also makes a fantastic Naseberry Eye Exfoliant that uses fruit extracts to remove dead cells and generally brighten skin, smoothing and improving skin tone.
Your eyes may be the window to your soul, but that soul can be as young as you feel. And it’s easier to feel like a young soul when that’s what your soul “windows” are projecting to the world!
